today, we published a new blog post: A beta version of OXID eShop 4.5.0 will still come before Christmas. Besides a newly designed store front, it will contain some interesting enhancements to the Smarty Template Engine (inheritance) and a module and template installer. Read more:

Question regarding the new templating system:
Will the data handed over to the Templates be identical to the current template, and just the design/layout of the new template has changed?
Are the template names identical to the current system?
I very much hope it will be that way, because otherwise you can start from scratch… :eek:
Is support for old templates (version 2/3) removed at this version?

@avenger: The older template system (now existing) will still be supported.
@Dominik: AFAIK we decided to ditch the support for the version 2/3 templates (get rid of depricated functions) with 4.5.0 a while ago on dev-general mailing list:
