MySQLs' GPL status endangered by Oracle?

Apparently the currently planned acquisition of SUN Microsystems (current owner of MySQL) by Oracle might pose a serisous danger to MySQL as an Open Source Free Database in the future.

Read the corresponding Blog entry of the original MySQL creator, and sign the proposed petition.

the best thing about open source products is: you’ll never get them proprietary.

if mysql goes proprietary, people can and will maintain the last version which was open source as an own independet fork of mysql. mysql is one of the biggest open source projects in existence, i think there would be a fork within minutes after the step to proprietary mysql.

btw, oracle currently provides innoDB storage engine, the most important storage engine for mysql, because it provides such “simple” things like foreign keys and sturff.
