After having success with 4.5.0 I re-installed 4.5.2 and found that I could not generate pics. The default ‘box’ image doesn’t even show for new products. I see the original photo gets uploaded to the appropriate place (pictures/master/) but nothing else gets generated. I’ve tried re-installing 4.5.2 but no change, and have since re-installed 4.5.0 to find things working fine again.
When I have the problem with 4.5.2 there is no error or message. But when you try to preview you get the “404 not found”. I’m now in the process of installing 4.5.1 to see if it works, but would like to know if anybody else is having this issue on 4.5.2. Or am I the only one?
I few notes on my setup:
Each install is done without the demo data
Using Lighty, not Apache
For test purposes I have all file/folder permissions unrestricted
…finished checking. I have the same problem with 4.5.1. Looks like I’m stuck with 4.5.0 for now. So, anybody have this problem with pictures for new products not generating?

i’ve a similar issue, i installed CE 4.5.4_39463 on my local notebook and on server. Local it works everything, but on the server there are no demo product images and if i want to add my product in backend, so on the left side there is also no images.
I tried everything with the rights, changed them to 777, but it didn’t help
My server system:
ubuntu 10.4, apache
PHP 5.3.2-1ubuntu4.10, Suhosin v0.9.29
Systemhealtht: only thing with possible php bugs is yellow, everything else is green.

thanks to your post of the link "check if PHPs safe mode is ON, in case it does not allow files/folder creation - disable it. ", my solution was just to add a line in the vhost configuration of my server:
php_admin_flag safe_mode Off
and the boxes appeared and some images.
